What is Your Neighborhood’s Walk Score?

June 25, 2008 · 2 Comments

Decrease your carbon footprint. Cut back on gas. Get Exercise.

These are all benefits to walking around in your neighborhood and cutting back on your car use for getting around locally. Of course, not everyone lives in the city where they can get to everything within a few blocks. Unless you really know your neighborhood though, you don’t really know just how walkable it is. So get to know it! Grab that bike that’s been gathering dust and brave the back roads. Even if you don’t live in a downtown area you may surprise yourself by finding it’s only a ten minute bike ride away. Very doable in the warm weather.

Still don’t believe me? Still skeptical? Find out if your hood is walkable by visiting Walk Score. It searches local points of interest and scores your neighborhood. If you are thinking about moving, this is also a good test to run to make sure that your future neighborhood scores high.

My walk score is just 20 so as you see my present neighborhood is not very walkable. This service can be especially useful for those who are going to buy a house cause it can help to estimate a particular location. But how often do we walk nowadays? I ve found one more service called drive score at
http://drivescore.fizber.com/ With it one can see how close establishments are by car. Homes are often located in an area where restaurants, libraries, grocery stores, hospitals and other businesses are easier to get to by car than on foot.
